Lucky was rescued from a very neglectful environment. She was surrendered to local animal control and Special Kay was asked to help.
She arrived at our vet in a dreadful state. Her fur was matted and full of excrement. She was infested with fleas. Her back legs were damaged in what we can only assume was being kicked. She never received any veterinarian care.
Months later her broken back has healed and as the xrays show her little spine is twisted. This has resulted in her inability to use her hind legs and incontinence.
This little dog has been through hell and still loves people. Lucky has bonded with the person who first handled her at the veterinarian office. The person who flea dipped her, bathed her and rescued her. From here on out Lucky will be safe and loved.

The Latest News in California... A friend of the rescue named Pam has fought a long battle with lung cancer and in late December of this year she came down with pneumonia and was hospitalized at which point it was determined that she would be entering hospice care. She was distraught because she could not take her little dogs with her. They had been by her side through the death of her spouse, her time of homelessness, her diagnosis and her daily life. Sparkle and Coco were her family and her reason to go on. She contacted us and we were able to bring the dogs to our sanctuary and allow them to spend the rest of their time being loved and cared for. We pray for Pam as her journey in this life comes to an end and are grateful we could provide her the comfort of knowing her soulmates

We rescue, rehome, and care for quite a few different pets and other animals
We are in the process of opening a new location in KENTUCKY, closing Happy Valley and Visalia in California. Of course our Whitmore CA location is still going strong
Special Kay Animal Rescue and Sanctuary Mayslick, KY • News from our Kentucky location: • We have rescued and given sanctuary to two special animals this month. Jill who is a mini-mule-mare and her friend a mini donkey named Jack. Jack and Jill arrived dirty and full of thistles, but they now enjoy a warm stall in the barn in inclement weather and a good healthy diet, special treats and lots of attention
Thanks to Kristin Mc for the blankets and misc items for the comfort of the animals.

Jada is a sweet loving girl who loves to nestle near a human and receive all the affection available. Jada has formed strong bonds with her sanctuary siblings and is a very integral part of the pack.
Freckles was adopted approximately 9 years ago. She came from a local breeder that was closing down due to her husband's illness. Freckles was blind, but one of the sweetest pups on the planet.
Freckles struggled with eye infections which ultimately resulted in her having her eyes removed. That surgery brought Freckles a great deal of relief until she developed cancer. After many years as a "special" member of the "Special Kay" family, she left us with many special memories.
One of our original rescues is Duke. Duke was rescued by a good Samaritan from the middle of the road where he had been dumped and hit by a car. Duke survived but has a seizure disorder which requires regular veterinary visits in order to monitor his blood levels and costly seizure medication. Duke is a sweet boy he loves to sleep on the bed with his human and special treats (hot dogs). Duke is living his best life. Please consider making a monthly pledge or a donation towards Duke's care and medication.
Pig was medical rescue. He had a stroke and his human said that he would never walk or have control of his bladder or bowels again, so she had to surrender him. With the support and love Pig walks and has total control of his bladder and bowels. He walks with a slight limp and takes blood pressure medication daily. He has regular veterinary visits to monitor his blood levels and medication as well. He loves his treats and is quite verbal. He is a sanctuary favorite. His personality is often described as that of a grumpy old man but he often has the energy of a young pup and if there are treats involved watch out!
It is with great sadness I share this photo of our beloved Beau. He was one of our rescues that found his forever home at the rescue. Beau's original owner had to move into Senior housing and she had aides that would help her with her day to day activities well Beau could not adjust to this environment and he would bite the staff. So we took him in almost 5 years ago the first two and a half weeks he stayed in a dark corner and would not allow anyone to approach.
iOnce he trusted us, we discovered he loved the car. Believe me no one would have tried to get in if they did not know Bo. He still struggled with strangers and certain people he just did not like, but he loved car rides and bacon. Bo suffered a stroke at the beginning of the week and the vet was unable to determine the exact cause, he was given medications but he crossed the rainbow bridge today. His spunky attitude and loyalty will be missed.
We are a 501(c)(3) certified organization so your donations are tax deductible on your federal tax return. We are looking for cat/dog food, cat litter, blankets, beds, and towels along with monetary donations for spay/neutering.
Thank you for thinking of the animals
Update. Baby is doing well. One baby was re-homed. The other (CLEO) is remaining in the sanctuary.
